Cabbage PalmThe Cabbage palm is an official state tree of both Florida and South Carolina. It is a symbol of beautiful coasts and native landscapes. It is the most widely distributed tree in these states. The Cabbage palm is displayed on the state flag and the state seal of South Carolina and the Florida State. It is called a “tree of life” among Native Americans in the southeastern United States. It is the most common native palm tree in the United States.

The Cabbage palm was designated as the official tree of the State of Florida in 1953. The Sabal palm is on the Florida state Seal (in 1970 the Florida legislature mandates that the Cabbage tree should be on the state seal).

South Carolina designated the Palmetto palm as the official tree of South Carolina in 1939. This symbol is on the South Carolina seal.

The Cabbage tree is protected by law. Historically, the Native Americans used the Cabbage palmetto for food, medicine and leaves for thatching and making ropes, furniture, fans and hats.
